Aa99 card games: build the right sequences

Man beside a roulette table — Aa99

Pool Rummy is useful because a single attractive-looking group does not prove a valid 13-card declaration. Its named rules require at least two sequences, with one pure.

This page explains game formats and rules; it is not a playable lobby. Check the relevant service for current game availability and the exact version in use.

A pure sequence has no substitution

Under RummyCircle's Pool Rummy example, 8♣, 9♣ and 10♣ run consecutively in one suit and form a pure sequence when no joker is used as a substitute. Three consecutive ranks of mixed suits are not the same thing. Color cannot stand in for suit.

This first group satisfies only one part of a valid declaration. The rules still require a second sequence and a valid arrangement of the remaining cards. A player cannot declare solely because one clean run appears.

An impure sequence can fill a different role

A hypothetical 3♥, 4♥ and a joker representing 5♥ illustrates an impure sequence: the missing rank is supplied by a substitute. It does not replace the need for a pure sequence under this named rule. If the joker is removed without a real 5♥, the run is incomplete.

The example is about card relationships, not a hand dealt at Aa99. When a table has its own joker restrictions, those specifics govern; do not copy a teaching arrangement into an unrelated card variant.

Penalty score is not hand validity

Pool Rummy's 101 and 201 formats refer to cumulative penalty thresholds across hands. The sequence test happens within the current 13-card hand; the threshold test tracks accumulated penalties. These are two different clocks in the same game.

For instance, a player with 68 accumulated points who receives 34 more reaches 102. That crosses a 101 threshold but remains below 201. The sum says nothing by itself about whether the present hand had a pure sequence; the hand arrangement must be checked separately.

Questions about games

Can 8♣, 9♣, 10♦ be a pure sequence?

No. The ranks run consecutively, but the third card changes suit.

Can a joker-assisted sequence replace the required pure sequence?

No. In RummyCircle's Pool Rummy rules, at least one sequence must be pure.

Does 101 describe a card count?

No. It is a cumulative penalty threshold in that named Pool Rummy format.
